What is the School of Grammar?

K-6th Grade (Tuesdays & Thursdays)

The Grammar stage is the first stage of learning in the trivium, considered the building block years. Students at the grammar level (Kindergarten through 6th grade) use language and knowledge as foundational skills. We help students hone these skills by taking in new information, memorizing it, and reciting it through song, poetry, and chant. “Education begins with memory and imitation” (Sayers, 1947).

Cultivating wonder and a love of learning in students at this age allows for them to appreciate their education in a different and distinct way. Integration of content areas provides students with an opportunity to make connections that help them begin to build a deep core body of knowledge, rather than learning content for the sole purpose of passing a test. Students at the top end of the grammar phase (6th grade) are preparing for their transition into the logic level of the trivium.

Singapore Dimensions

The Singapore math method is highly effective and uses a metacognitive approach. This means that children understand number sense through tactile, concrete and then abstract concepts. It prepares students for success at the upper school by naturally developing mental math skills, which is more effective than just learning procedural mastery, such as Saxon math, everyday math or ready math. Singapore math was originally developed by Singapore’s Ministry of Education in the 1980s for Singapore public schools.

It has since been widely adopted in various forms around the world over the past 25 years following its introduction in the U.S. in 1998. Singapore Dimensions has been adopted by classical programs, such as Hillsdale College, Lehman Academy, Arma Dei and other top-performing classical schools.

How our 2-Day collaborative model works

An Academic Collaborative

At Summit Homeschool Academy, we are committed to teaching all core academics in the morning, which has been proven to be the best time for children developmentally. Our homeschool enrichment program partners with parents to teach Math & English, providing a classical curriculum, Teacher Guides, Professionally-developed pacing guides, expert parent training, 1-on-1 parent coaching for math and literacy and several community opportunities to connect.

With highly qualified subject-expert teachers (not general education specialists), small class sizes (up to 12 students), parent training, and classical curriculum our program ensures families are well-supported in educating their child. As an academic collaborative, we teach 2 lessons per week, while parents, as the Primary Educators, teach 2-3 lessons a week in Math & English, outlined in the online portal, with unofficial grades.
