Homeschool Enrollment Process

Congratulations for choosing to homeschool...here's what to do next!

STEP 1: Withdraw from Your Current School

You must submit a withdrawal form to your child's current school, even if switching between public schools (full-time or enrichment programs). Failing to withdraw could result in the state allocating your funding to the previous program, potentially blocking enrollment in your new choice after the official count day (typically mid-October). If funding is denied, you may be responsible for expenses from the first day of school until the new school is notified-unless your child has never been enrolled in a public school, in which case you can skip to Step 2.

STEP 2: Choose Your Homeschooling Path

In Colorado, you have 3 legal options to homeschool:

  1. Be a Colorado Certified Teacher - If you're certified,  you're ready to go. If not, additional steps are required.
  2. File a Notice of Intent (NOI) - Submit a NOI to a school district of your choice. AS the primary educator, you'll need to maintain records proving your child is receiving a legitimate education (state requirements are outlined below). If a neglect case arises, the state with first check district records, then may request more details from you to confirm compliance with homeschool laws.
  3. Enroll in an Umbrella School - This option places you under private school law, freeing you from timekeeping, testing, and immunization requirements tied to homeschool regulations. However, your Umbrella School may still require attendance records or assessments. Students must be enrolled for at least 172 days per year, unlike the homeschool law's focus on justifying 172 days of instruction averaging 4 hours daily. In a neglect case, the state will review Umbrella School records first, then may seek additional information from you to verify compliance with school standards.

STEP 3: Build Your Homeschool Adventure

Now the fun begins! Craft an academic plan, select your teaching methods and curriculum, and dive in! Focus less on rushing through materials and more on nurturing your child's growth, passion, and mastery. One of the joys of homeschooling is flexibility-some kids breeze through an academic year, while others take extra time. Tailor the journey to your child's needs and enjoy the process!

Notice of Intent (NOI)

If you are not a Colorado Certified Teacher AND you are not enrolled in an Umbrella School, you are required to submit a Notice of Intent (NOI) to a school district of your choice. As the primary educator of your child, parents are responsible for maintaining records that demonstrate they are providing a legitimate and quality education to their child.

The NOI may be filled with any school district in Colorado and can be submitted either by mail, addressed to the Superintendent, or via email to the District Homeschool Coordinator. However, if your child will be participating in extracurricular activities - such as sports, dances/homecoming/prom, or after-school activities - at their school, the NOI must be filed in your local school district.

In the event of an educational neglect case, the state would first request records from the school district. If further information is needed, they may contact the family to assess compliance with Colorado's homeschooling requirements and determine next steps. Families should be prepared to provide documentation showing adherence to state standards, as outlined below.

To file an NOI in Douglas County, contact Lisa Sharpe at Lisa.Sharpe@dcsdk12.org. Alternatively, you can complete the online NOI here: https://edocs.dcsdk12.org/dcsdk12/renderSmartForm.action?formId=dff40185-8917-4934-9b88-ab6f642f3609
