The Grammar stage is the first stage of learning in the trivium, considered the building block years. Students at the grammar level (Kindergarten through 6th grade) use language and knowledge as foundational skills. We help students hone these skills by taking in new information, memorizing it, and reciting it through song, poetry, and chant. In grades K-6, we co-teach. Some of the lessons are taught in the classroom setting, and some of the lessons are taught by parents at home.
English: We co-teach literacy and handwriting with parents using Logic of English in grades K-2. In grades 3-6, teachers deliver all of the writing course in the classroom using Classical Writing. This beautiful curriculum integrates spelling, grammar, literary analysis and written expression fully aligned to the progym, the classical method of teaching writing. Parent support homework by making sure the assignments are completed, and reading through/discussing the meaning of the beautiful literature excepts with their child. Literature cannot "fit" into our day, but a classical literature training is included, and will be lead by Rachel Jensen, our Classical Education Coordinator. (Also, those taking History will have enough primary texts to cover their literature instruction.)
Math: The Singapore math method is highly effective and uses a metacognitive approach. This means that children understand number sense through tactile, concrete and then abstract concepts vs. strictly procedural mastery (Saxon).
Logic School, 7th-9th Grade (T/TH):
In classical education the Logic stage is where students discover why certain facts exist as certainties. They want to know the “why” of something—the logic behind it. They learn to critically think through ideas and arguments, and begin to develop skills to argue with wisdom and eloquence. The goal in this stage is to teach students how to formulate good questions, sort information, draw comparisons and contrasts, and how to collect, process, and apply the knowledge they have previously acquired in the grammar stage.
Rhetoric School 9th-12th Grades (M/W):
The foundational skills from the grammar stage and the analytical skills from the logic stage come together and form a spring board of learning potential. Students study and practice rhetoric skills that develop and grow the art of persuasive speaking and effective writing. The goal in this stage is to equip and train students to solve problems and defend their ideas and processes through writing, speech, or conversation.
